The Sentamu Academy Learning Trust (SALT) is a Company limited by guarantee and a Charitable Trust. Responsibility for the academies that make up the Trust and for the funds granted by Parliament for providing education in those academies is entrusted to the Board of Trustees. 

The Board of Trustees has the following three core functions:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  2. Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the academies, their pupils and the performance management of staff;
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the Trust and make sure its money is well spent.

The Trustees retain authority and responsibility for:

  • Compliance with all statutory regulations and Acts of Parliament which govern the operations of the academies;
  • Preparation, approval and review as appropriate of the terms of reference and operating policies under which each academy is governed and managed;
  • Approval of the Trust’s annual report and accounts.

Peter joined the Governing body of Archbishop Sentamu Academy in October 2013. For the last 12 years he has been a partner in a leading local firm of Chartered Accountants, having previously been a Hull based partner in a global firm of Business Advisors. Immediately prior to becoming a governor, he spent over 7 years as a non-executive director of Humber NHS Foundation Trust. He is also a governor of a primary school in East Yorkshire and, in his professional capacity, acts for a number of academies and Multi Academy Trusts, as well as a broad range of owner-managed businesses. Outside work, he also holds positions with Northern Academy of Performing Arts Education Trust, Bishop Burton College and Age UK Hull & East Riding.

Carl Wilhelm Irene (Calie) Pistorius is a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Hull and University of Pretoria along with being a former Governor of Hymers College. Calie obtained the degree B.Sc (cum laude) in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pretoria in 1979 and the degree B.Eng (Hons) (cum laude) in electronic engineering from the same university in 1981. Calie also obtained a M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Ohio State University in the U.S. in 1984, a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering also from the Ohio State University in 1986, and a Master’s degree in Management (M.B.A.) from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1994.

Colin is an experienced public finance accountant and management consultant. Colin’s early career was in Local Government in Newcastle upon Tyne where he trained as an accountant, then two years as a Chief Accountant at Durham City Council. He joined Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC) in 1987 as a management consultant. After 3 years, mainly working in contracting-out services and developing NHS trusts, he joined South Tees Hospitals working directly to the Trust Finance Director on various major projects. His mid career was dominated by working on large NHS PFI building projects at South Tees and then at Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals where he was Deputy Director of Finance. His final years in the NHS was as a Finance Director at a PCT. Colin has spent the last 12 years as a management consultant working for a wide range of clients mainly in the public sector including setting up academies and free schools. Last year he left DBO LLP, where he was an Associate Director, to set up his own consultancy business. Colin has extensive experience in the schools sector. Colin spent three and a half years on the Board of Aylesbury Vale Primary Care Trust (PCT) as Director of Finance. As well as finance, his responsibilities included the PCTs estate and nonclinical risk management.

Alison has worked in education for the past 19 years and joined the ASA governing body in May 2016. She is highly committed to supporting the development of educational provision which allows pupils to flourish both ‘academically and personally’, and provision which ensures pupils develop a life -long ‘love of learning.

Alison is currently the School Effectiveness Adviser for the Diocese of York Education Team. As School Effectiveness Adviser for the Diocese of York, Alison provides a role which focusses upon monitoring the overall effectiveness and performance of all 127 schools across the Diocese of York locality. In order to do this she has developed strong partnerships with 7 LA’s, and also liaises with colleagues at NCTL, OFSTED, DfE and the Church of England Education Office. She also works with a number of governing bodies across the diocese. Prior to joining the Diocese of York Education Team, Alison worked for North Yorkshire Children and Young People’s Service for 16 years, beginning as a Primary School Teacher, and then as an Advanced Skills Teacher. Most recently she was a Head Teacher of a C of E Primary School for almost 10 years. As a Head Teacher, she had varied experience, leading an infant school initially from ‘good to outstanding’, and then being Executive Head Teacher for a second school which required additional leadership support when being deemed to require special measures and led the school successfully from this.

Jane Lewis founded Together People in 2005, as a leadership and organisational development consultancy following 15 years in the water industry. She is an experienced coach and facilitator who has worked with directors and boards in a variety of organisations.
She has been a charity trustee for almost 25 years. She became a Governor in 2001 and has chaired Governing Boards in faith and community schools. She was designated as a National Leader of Governance in 2012.
Jane co-authored the original DfE guidance on External Reviews of Governance (ERGs) and regularly undertakes ERGs in a variety of settings. She is the Regional NLG Champion for East Midlands, South Yorkshire & Humber TSC Region. She has run NLG Induction and ERG training for NCTL. Jane began teaching in 1991 as a Home Economics teacher in Staffordshire, was then appointed to Thomas Telford School in January 1995 as the Programme Lead for GNVQ Health and Social Care and then joined OCR Examinations in April 1999 as a Subject Officer. Since relocating to North Lincolnshire in 2007 Jane was appointed to The Vale Academy in Brigg responsible for Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE), work experience, careers and suppporting students’ decision making in their transition post 16. In 2012 Jane joined the secondary teacher education programme at the University of Hull as a temporary support and partnership tutor which was then made permanent and in 2014 was appointed as lecturer in teacher education and module leader for the level 7 learning and teaching module which all students undertaking the PGCE study. More recently Jane has been appointed programme lead for the Assessment Only (AO) route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and secondary lead for the School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme. Jane now teaches and supervises students on the primary, secondary and masters’ level provision across the School of Education and Social Sciences (SESS) as well as working across the primary and secondary school partnership within the Yorkshire and Humber region offering support and training for teachers in schools who mentor students undertaking the various routes into teaching. Jane has also recently accepted posts as External Examiner for the SCITT provision at Pymouth MarJon and the Assessment only route at Newman, Birmingham which will support and enhance responsibilities at Hull. Jane is currently undertaking a doctorate with a focus on student teachers’ beliefs and their perception of lessons taught during the PGCE year.

Fred has volunteered for over 20 years developing young people in the community and seen first-hand the difference engaging young people at an early stage makes. During Fred’s children’s primary years he was a school governor and enjoyed visiting the school and taking the time to engage with the teaching staff and the support staff.

Andrew is currently CEO of the Trust and was the founding Principal of Archbishop Sentamu Academy (ASA), an 11-18 academy of 1550 students located in East Hull, an area characterised by one of the highest levels of deprivation in the country. In September 2014, Andrew established ASPIRE, the largest Alternative Provision (AP) academy in the country, following a successful bid to the DfE under the Free School programme. In February 2015, Andrew also became the founder Executive Principal of the Sentamu Academy Learning Trust (SALT), an academy trust that currently comprises ASA, 3 local primary schools, and ASPIRE.
